Why Give Wedding Favors In Your Wedding?
Tuesday, April 27th, 2010Wedding is an event that highlights the lives of people in a relationship. In as much as couples plan for their wedding day in terms of reception, wedding gown, and the entourage, part of the preparation includes wedding favors. These are small gifts given by the newlywed couple to guests. The giving of gifts is a simple gesture of showing appreciation to their guests for attending and sharing with them the most special occasion of their lives.
The giving of gifts to guests started as early as the 16th century. It is said that the rich Europeans used to give bonbonniere, a small box made of porcelain, crystal or precious stones that has sugar cubes inside or some delicate confection. The crystal cubes or confection symbolizes royalty and wealth. In other practices, each guest was given with something that contains five candies that represent five common wedding wishes such as happiness, health, wealth, fertility, and longevity.
Over time, sugarcoated almonds replaced the traditional gift giving with sugar and candies. Usually, these are given in set of three or five. A set of three symbolizes the husband, wife and future offspring while the set of five represents health, happiness, fertility, longevity and wealth.
